What is an NMLS -approved Mortgage School?

The NMLS, or Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System, is an organization that holds records related to mortgage companies, principals and loan officers. The NMLS database centralizes information, providing transparency to consumers, while also making the mortgage licensing process uniform. The Conference of State Bank Supervisors and American Association of Residential Mortgage Regulators created the organization in response to the federal S.A.F.E. Act of 2008.
Mortgage Loan Officers must register for a unique ID number, which consumers can confirm in the NMLS system. Schools offering NMLS-approved courses must apply to the organization, which includes submitting details for how the course is implemented and how students are evaluated. Course providers must also sign a Code of Conduct Agreement.
When completing mortgage lending courses in Nevada, depending on whether its continuing education or pre-licensure education, the S.A.F.E. Act requires students to take a minimum of 8 and 20 hours of NMLS approved education, respectively, according to the NMLS Resource Center.
